Top five tips to choosing the best graphic designer or agency

When it comes to designing or even re-designing your brand, it’s important to be able to fully trust your graphic designer and have faith they will work their magic to take your branding to the next level. However, with so many graphic designers and agencies out there, how do you know who or which one to choose?

Look at their website

Looking at the graphic designer or agency’s website will give you an idea of their work and will allow you to get a feel for their design abilities. Look to see if they have a portfolio of work displayed – this will give you a real insight into their skills and talents.

We have a portfolio section on the Thomas Design website that allows our potential clients to see some of the work we have produced – it’s a simple and quick way for clients to get a feel for what we do and what we can provide.

Know what skills to look for

If you are looking for a graphic designer to assist with your branding on merchandise, don’t opt for the designer or design company that hasn’t got experience in that specific area. You may like other pieces of work they provide, but it doesn’t mean they will be able to provide exactly what you are looking for in this situation.

Speak to the graphic designer before committing

It’s always best to talk to talk to the graphic designer before you commit and assign them work. Yes, looking at their website and portfolio will give you an idea of what they are capable of, but it is very important that you can connect with the designer and be on the same page when it comes to your ideas and expectations.

Don’t be alarmed if the designer suggests other design options – remember, your idea may not be the best for what you are trying to achieve, and the right designer should be open and honest with you rather than go along with it to keep you happy for the time being.

Ask what you need to provide

Talk to your designer about what they require from you to be able to conduct the work efficiently. Whether it’s physical items (documents, existing merchandise, artwork etc.) or time-related requirements, such as time to proof designs and discuss design options - it’s important to be able to dedicate time out of your day to be on hand in case the designer needs your input.

Find out what inspires that designer

It’s important to understand what motivates and inspires the designer you’re talking to. If you can get an idea of what they draw inspiration from, this will give you a good understanding of their style, likes and dislikes and could spark ideas you never thought was possible.

Just remember, when choosing a graphic designer, look for more than what skills on paper they possess. It’s about the designer’s creative abilities and the way they connect with your business, as well as your ideas. It’s very normal for a designer to suggest alternative options – in fact, it’s what they should do, so make sure you go into this process with an open mind.
