The world of design can be a mind-blowing bubble, full of colossal workloads and a million and one deadlines, and for someone new to this world, entering it can be quite daunting. However, if you are a new graphic designer, fear not as we have some top tips for you to help you adjust!
Graphic design is a very competitive field, and so it is imperative you stand out from the crowd. Find your own style and stick to it. You will naturally have a style that is original, compared to what other designers can bring to the table. Hone in on your skills and use them – be creative and imaginative. In this competitive world, businesses are looking to stand out from the crowd, and so they are looking for a graphic designer who can best represent this. The best designers are the ones who stay true to themselves and don’t try and imitate other designers’ styles.
Don’t lose the pencil
Sitting in front of a computer all day can lead to the temptation of creating your design from start to finish on the PC. However, one of the most effective ways of planning and brainstorming our ideas is with the good old fashioned pad and pencil. Sketch down your ideas and write down your storyboards - your creativity can flow just as fast on paper as it can on a PC. The more prepared you are the better your design will be.
Design, design, design
The first design you come up with will most likely not be the best one. This is completely normal and even though you may feel some connection to it (as it is your first design), we make sure we never become attached to it. Instead, create several design options to get your creativity flowing and in turn this will result in a bigger and better final design.
It’s important for us to provide multiple designs to our clients, as they may have a certain image in their head of what they think will work best, however we like to show them what other options are available to them that may work better.
Be adaptable and flexible
The design field is always evolving. There are constantly new tools, tricks and techniques to learn and pick up. Be open to learning these new skills, as this will keep your work fresh and exciting and enhance your artistic abilities as a graphic designer. Don’t just stick to one piece of software - experiment with various software and devices. Keep in the loop of the latest trends and don’t isolate yourself as a designer, get out there and network with other designers and learn from them. Networking events can be a great way to meet designers alike and learn tips and tricks from them.
Keep striving to learn more – it’ll never be too much.
Even if you have a mountain of deadlines looming over you or the creative ideas are clogging up and slowing down, it is important to still believe in your design capabilities and not lose confidence. Every person who is new to the field of turning their design talents into a profession, can find it overwhelming, but persevere and keep the end result in mind. Look around and get inspired by the smallest of things – you’ll be surprised what can influence your next design!
